BLOG: Pledge of Allegiance ruling a victory for common sense
Last week’s decision by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to keep “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance and “In God We Trust” on our currency is a victory for common sense. These words serve to unite our vast nation through the proud recitation of some basic ideals upon which our country was founded. Our Founding Fathers knew that our rights were not given to us by the state, but rather endowed to us by our Creator and this decision is recognition of that fact.
The notion that reciting the words “under God” violates the United States Constitution is without foundation. The men and women who built our nation were clear from the start that they wanted God to be a part of the newly founded country. Since 1954, Americans have proudly recited the Pledge of Allegiance with “under God” and to alter that now because a handful of people say they’re offended by the pledge in its current form would stand freedom of speech on its head. Today, our courts too often purge religion from the public stage, to the detriment of believers of many faiths. Having these words in our Pledge of Allegiance does not remotely create a state religion, but rather expands the scope of our freedom to speak and to worship to their rightful place in our nation.
As Americans we should honor our country as it was founded -- on the principles of freedom, liberty and justice under God’s hand. When we do that, it will reflect upon the strength of our families and our country.
