“We need to be unembarrassed to tell the world that America is a great nation.”
Those were the words of Congressman-elect Mike Pompeo at the Veterans Day memorial service Thursday morning. Despite a chilly morning, the Emporia All-Veterans Memorial Park was packed with people who stopped their day to honor veterans — both present and past — that have and are currently serving the United States. Emporia is the founding city of Veterans Day. Veterans Day was first observed in Emporia in 1953.
Pompeo, from Wichita, was elected in this month’s election to the United States Congress. He is a Kansas businessman, West Point graduate and a graduate of Harvard University. Nine days after being elected to Congress — Veterans Day — Pompeo was speaking in Emporia.
