The article “Big D.C. names host Pompeo fundraiser” (May 16 Eagle) was biased and unfairly attacked some true veterans and patriots. As a former Marine general and conservative Republican, I’d like to correct that record.
Knowing that a labor secretary, national security adviser, federal trade commissioner and other Reagan administration officials have joined in supporting Mike Pompeo for Congress cements my belief that Pompeo is the kind of conservative our country and the 4th Congressional District so desperately needs. The support of a board member of Citizens Against Government Waste also is consistent with his pledge not to request earmarks.
As for the support of Pompeo by decorated Marine Robert “Bud” McFarlane: The article said that McFarlane had signed a deal with the Middle East nation of Qatar to help broker a peace settlement on behalf of the government of Sudan. McFarlane has not worked for the government of Sudan, but rather has been coaching the tribal leaders of Darfur — the victims of the Sudanese government — to achieve a peaceful outcome. The article failed to mention that McFarlane was a key element of President Reagan’s team that ended the Cold War. The fact that McFarlane — and so many other veterans — are supporting Pompeo says a lot about Pompeo’s ability and commitment to keeping our country safe.
